California Giant laying out plans for future
Like everyone in California, California Giant Berry Farms is concerned about the drought and the effects it will continue to have on both personal life and in produce production.
“Currently we are able to conserve water in our berry-growing regions and use only drip irrigation,” said Cindy Jewell, vice president of marketing. “We have installed micro-sprinklers to further save on water usage. We monitor our wells, and continually monitor all irrigation systems to make sure we don’t have any leaks or waste.”
Like everyone in the state, the company hopes to see a shift to more traditional weather patterns next winter to help with its 2016 crop.
“Since we only have one crop per year, we are focused on ensuring we maintain what is in the ground this year, as well as staying focused on ensuring we have ample water for next year’s planting,” noted Jewell. “Unfortunately, next year’s planting begins later this summer in our Southern California growing region. So farmers there will be faced with some difficult decisions on how much to plant based on current water availability.”
