Big Y hires nearly 1,000 former Hannaford employees to staff acquired stores
Big Y Foods Inc. has hired 1084 employees for its Hannaford Supermarkets in the eastern Massachusetts area, including 100 percent of Hannaford’s management team. Nearly 1,000 of these new hires are former Hannaford employees.
Since announcing its agreement to acquire the assets of eight Massachusetts Hannaford Supermarkets being divested in connection with the merger of the Ahold and Delhaize group in July, representatives from Big Y have been busy interviewing every applicant for employment in these stores.
Currently, these new hires are training on Big Y’s systems and processes so they will be ready to serve their customers in early September when this eight-store transaction is completed. They have been training within their respective stores or at a nearby Big Y. And, Big Y is continuing to hire to staff these “new” markets.
Following the completion of this transaction on Sept. 6, four stores will close for a few days in order to make some minor renovations such as rebranding and signage, equipment upgrades, cleaning, painting and re-stocking with fresh product. The remaining stores will temporarily close Sept. 11 and re-open on Sept. 16 as Big Y World Class Markets.
“All of us at Big Y are thrilled to be able to hire practically all of the employees from these Hannaford Supermarkets," Charles L. D’Amour, Big Y president and chief operating officer, said in a press release. "We are excited to have this opportunity to grow and to further expand into some key markets in eastern Massachusetts and to bring our legendary world-class service and quality to our new customers in these communities. We are particularly proud to welcome so many talented and hard-working Hannaford employees to the Big Y family.”
D’Amour also noted that both companies share the same family values and culture. “We are confident that the transition will be seamless,” he said.
Once completed, Big Y will have a total of 79 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, including 72 supermarkets, 39 pharmacies, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors and 5 Big Y Express gas and convenience locations.
