Somerfield Farms set for strong domestic blueberry season
The 2025 domestic blueberry season is shaping up to be a strong one and Somerfield Farms is positioned to be among the earliest to market with fresh blueberries from central and south Florida.
As imports from South America begin to decline, Somerfield Farms will be ready to transition smoothly into domestic production supporting retail, wholesale and foodservice partners alike with high-quality fruit starting late February and building to strong volumes by early March.
Weather challenges create opportunities
This year, weather events in key growing regions have highlighted the importance of a reliable domestic supply chain, according to Somerfield.
Georgia, a significant contributor to the blueberry market, has experienced an unexpected cold snap that may delay its start by one to two weeks. Even growers in northern Florida have faced challenges, with colder-than-usual temperatures dipping into the region. Somerfield Farms’ production in central and south Florida has remained resilient, ensuring strong yields and reliable volumes to meet market demands.
Somerfield Farms takes pride in its comprehensive domestic berry program, covering all major U.S. growing regions from Florida to Georgia, New Jersey to Michigan and throughout the Pacific Northwest, including British Columbia. This coast-to-coast coverage ensures a consistent supply of fresh blueberries throughout the season.
Somerfield offers all pack styles and sizes, including jumbo, and grows both conventional and organic product with the goal of delivering quality and flexibility to meet the needs of its partners.
The upcoming domestic blackberry season is also a highlight for the company. Somerfield Farms is excited to offer a robust supply of flavorful, high-quality blackberries that are sure to resonate with everyone.
In addition to blueberries and blackberries, the company complements its offerings with strawberries and raspberries, available in limited quantities year-round, creating a well-rounded program.
New VP of sales on board
Somerfield Farms also announced the addition of Tom Smith as its new vice president of sales. With years of experience and a proven track record from his time in the fresh berry industry, Smith brings invaluable expertise and leadership to the team.
His addition strengthens the company’s commitment to providing unmatched service and value to its partners.
Under Smith’s leadership, Somerfield Farms is well-positioned to continue its growth and innovation, building out a year-round supply of all four berries across all regions.
