Associated Potato Growers’ red potato volume up this season
Red potato prices in the New Year are expected to hold, according to Paul Dolan, manager of Associated Potato Growers Inc., located in Grand Forks, ND.
A key wildcard in early 2014 pricing for the Red River Valley shippers will be the oncoming Florida red potato deal. Dolan noted, “A short supply of seed may help that situation.”
Red potatoes shipped from Canada and Wisconsin also figure into the overall marketing scenario.
Dolan added, “We are down a little in the valley as a whole.”
In mid-December Associated Potato still had three sheds of potato volume to ship. “We are the largest packer in the valley,” Dolan quietly added.
“We have a few thousand hundredweight more than last year,” he said. “Our quality is so much better that we will definitely harvest more. We hope to hold the market so our growers can make some money. If they are priced right at the store, we’ll have a price the growers can make a profit on.”
