Apache focuses on technology upgrades
nogales, az — Information technology upgrades are the focus for Apache Produce Imports LLC. This gives greater control of food safety and quality control practices, according to Alejandro Canelos, who is the director of the Mexican produce grower and distributor.
“The old ways of clip boards and keeping papers in boxes are not going to cut it. That will leave companies in stagnation,” Canelos said.
Alejandro Canelos, director of Apache Produce Imports LLC, flanked by sales representatives Pepe Pesqueira and George Duron. To keep up with customer and government food-safety requirements Apache is using SafetyChain Software, based in San Rafael, CA. “Apache was an early adopter” of SafetyChain, Canelos said. “I believe in the product and I believe in this kind of product for our industry.” The software comprehensively involves functions including traceability, quality assurance or metrics at the farm.
Food Safety Modernization Act information requirements are “orders of magnitude” beyond diligence levels required before, he said.
“The more information I can collect before I ship the better off I am,” said Canelos. He expects customer demands for food-safety records to increase in the next year or two “and we want to integrate our information technology system from the producer through the entire supply chain to the consumer, rather than have all separate systems.”
Maintaining cohesive records throughout the distribution process is just as important as maintaining the cold chain is to produce quality and safety.
