A&P looking to sell remaining stores
The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., once the largest U.S. supermarket chain with more than 15,000 stores, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 19.
At the time the company announced plans to sell 118 stores and close an additional 25; however, A&P is now looking to sell its remaining 153 stores.
While the deals aren’t final, there are three bidders for the initial 118 stores: Ahold's Stop & Shop division, ACME Markets and Key Food Stores Co-operative Inc.
As is the case with the first 118 stores, the deadline to submit a bid for one or more of the chain’s remaining 153 stores is Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. While there has been speculation as to which companies might be a good fit to buy some of the remaining stores, no new bids have been announced at this point.
