Annual Sonora Spring Summit set for April 24-25 in Hermosillo
The annual Sonora Spring Summit, hosted by the Association Agricola Local de Productores Uva de Mesa, the local association of table grape growers in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, commonly known by its Spanish acronym, AALPUM, is scheduled to be held in Hermosillo April 24-25.
The two-day event is open to producers, distributors, buyers and anyone else in the industry interested in attending. As usual, it will consist of a tour of grape vineyards on one day and meetings on the following day.
Attendees at the 2013 Sonora Spring Summit visit a grape vineyard near Hermosillo, Mexico. On Thursday evening, following the grape tours, there will be “a great dinner under the stars, and the stars in the desert are pretty amazing,” said Allison Moore, director of legislative and regulatory affairs for the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas in Nogales, AZ, one of the sponsors of the event, in an interview with The Produce News April 7.
A highlight of the meeting is the announcement and a discussion on Friday afternoon of the official industry estimates and start dates for the 2013 crop, variety by variety.
The summit is “really the open house of the Sonora grape industry,” said Moore.
In addition to the vineyard tour, the event “brings in global grape industry experts to talk about what is happening all over the world” as well as what is happening locally in Sonora.
“Obviously, the big highlight is to talk about what the Sonora season, specifically will look like,” she said.
As usual, John Pandol, a director at Pandol Bros. Inc. in Delano, CA, and chairman of the FPAA’s grape division, will be speaking. Among the other scheduled speakers are Oscar Solgado, “who goes all around the world and looks at grapes and takes pictures of grapes and talks about grapes,” Moore said.
Alejandro Molina, a motivational speaker, will also be part of the program.
“We are going to have Customs and Border Protection there, talking about what is happening at ports of entry and initiatives for commercial crossings,” Moore added.
