As an anchor tenant at the Detroit Produce Terminal, Riggio Distribution Co. has long been one of the largest produce wholesalers servicing the Midwest.

“Southeast Michigan and Metro Detroit has been home to our family and our team for many years,” said the company’s Dominic Riggio. “Our family is third-generation produce wholesalers with relationships in the business going back decades. Detroit is a very strong produce town known for quality and competitive pricing.”

The Van Solkema family, the fifth-generation growers and shippers behind Van Solkema Produce, have been in the produce industry for more than 117 years. The company operates in the growing regions of Glennville, GA, Moultrie, GA and its home base of Byron Center, MI.

Rocky Produce, a Detroit-based distributor that delivers product across Michigan and throughout the Midwest, is excited to embark on another busy summer season full of fresh, locally grown produce.

“All is well,” said Dominic Russo, sales team member of Rocky Produce. “It’s nice to be in this time of the year. A lot of fruits are moving — a lot of berries, melons, and California tree fruit is off the ground. It’s nice to have all these things to offer this time of year.”

North Bay Produce is a cooperative of more than 32 grower-owners from North, Central and South America, producing fresh fruits and vegetables year-round.

Edward L. Myrick Produce has long been a big player in the produce scene in Florida and Georgia, working with chain stores and wholesalers all around the United States and Canada. This year, the Pompano Beach, FL-based company opened a new Michigan facility in an effort to increase its year-round supply of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Michigan is known for growing a wide variety of crops and the state leads the nation in the production of asparagus, black and cranberry beans, cucumbers, tart cherries, Niagara grapes and squash.

According to the Michigan Vegetable Council, there are more than 167,000 acres of vegetables grown in Michigan. While farms range in size, the majority of the medium and larger growers are generational farms, while newer farmers tend to be smaller, though some newer growers are working on large farms and are very strong and active.
