Continuing its forward motion into year two of new ownership and management, Snake River Produce, based in Nyssa, OR, implemented a number of changes over the past 12 months.

General Manager Joshua Frederick noted, “We have made some changes on the farm with more acreage added by a couple of our growers along with some different varieties added to the early program which started the week of Aug. 7.”

In personnel, Frederick said he maintains his role as GM for the operation and also works sales.

Since its inaugural shipping season in 2017, Baker & Murakami Produce Co. has been one of the Northwest’s largest turnkey onion operations, bringing decades of experience to operations and sales as well as advanced line technology to the 20,000-square foot finished product/shipping structure.

After doubling its Treasure Valley onion supplies by merging with Fiesta Farms in Nyssa, OR, five years ago and entering an and exclusive sales and marketing arrangement with Central Produce in Payette, ID, in 2021, Eagle Eye Produce headed into the 2023-24 season with significant investments in its Idaho-E. Oregon facilities.

As the 2023-24 season got underway, Commodity Sales Manager Jason Pearson looked back at changes made since last season.

Fort Boise Produce, now overseen by the fourth generation of the homesteading Farmer family, kicked off the 2023-24 season with a new sales manager and continuation of its longstanding commitment to quality and service.

Jacob Gaschler, whose official start date with Fort Boise was Jan. 1, stepped into the position with solid roots in produce and familiarity with the region. Gaschler grew up in Ontario, OR, and attended Portland State University where he earned a B.S. in Public Health.

As onion harvest 2021 continues in the Treasure Valley of Idaho-E. Oregon, Baker & Murakami Produce in Ontario, OR, is seeing some reduction in yields and a smaller onion size profile, but demand in mid-September was strong for all colors and in all markets.

According to COO Cameron Skeen, the full effect of this year’s planting and growing season had yet to be determined. “Yields are off, and the size profile is smaller than normal,” Skeen said on Sept. 13.

With the 2021 onion shipping season fully underway in the Treasure Valley, Idaho Falls-based Eagle Eye Produce said it is seeing pre-COVID movement for its retail onions and ongoing recovery in the foodservice sector.

Director of Business Development Joe Ange said foodservice has made a big comeback since the 2020 lockdown, which is good news for the onion industry.
