Buoyed by a hot market, California avocado growers started picking their 2022 crop earlier than expected. By the end of March, they will have already shipped about 20 percent of their expected volume for the season.

The California Fresh Fruit Association kicked off its new fiscal year on Tuesday, March 15, during the Annual Membership Meeting at the 86th annual meeting in Laguna Beach, CA. The event featured the election of the board of directors and chairman, as well as industry and committee updates.

With California avocado season officially under way, West Pak Avocado, a California-based avocado supplier, saw record volume in February.

“Between a later big game this year and the week-long hiccup in supply from Mexico, California fruit saw a record 10.2 percent market share in February,” said Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doug Meyer. “At this point, over 10 percent of the California fruit for the season has been harvested, which is typically only a few percent by the end of February.”

California strawberry season is under way, and with it comes a lot of excitement for this year’s crop. The California Strawberry Commission noted that nearly one-third of consumers named strawberries as their favorite in a recent national survey.

The CSC represents more than 300 strawberry farmers, shippers and processors, collaboratively working together to advance the position, principles, and market for California strawberries.

Near the end of the 2021 leafy greens growing season on California’s Central Coast, the LGMA program made updates to its food-safety standards. As the 2022 Central Coast growing season kicks off, LGMA members have several new requirements related to food safety.
