After 67 years, Rawl family as Clayton Rawl Farms still strong at state farmers market
WEST COLUMBIA, SC —The Rawl family began growing produce in Lexington County, SC, in 1948, and sold most of the leafy greens and green onions they grew at the South Carolina State Farmers Market here. Today, 67 years later, the Rawl family, doing business as Clayton Rawl Farms, still has a strong presence at the up-to-date farmers market, with added customers including East Coast supermarkets and wholesalers.
Mark DiNovo is co-manager of the Clayton Rawl Farms retail center at the South Carolina Farmers Market in West Columbia, SC. “We sell our own produce in-season, and operate as a broker sourcing from out-of-state growers when it’s our off-season,” said Mark DiNovo, a co-manager of the Rawl stand at the farmers market. An Ohio Wesleyan University graduate, DiNovo also is a consultant and operates a nonprofit, Eat Smart Move More Lexington County. “Sometimes it’s both. Right now, we feature strawberries grown at our farms here, and Vidalia onions from Georgia.”
DiNovo’s 20 years of brokering includes operating a restaurant and stints at Raybon Tomato Co., Central Marketing Associates and a fitness company. “The most important skill gained has been understanding the importance of relationships and partnering, whether to improve a produce distribution chain or developing a coalition to combat obesity,” he stated. The farmers market opened at 4 a.m. that day, so things were winding down at 2 p.m. DiNovo switched a fan on and directed its airstream toward the bagged onions. “They need a little breeze today,” he explained.
Today, Clayton Rawl Farms is one of the larger leafy green growers in the Southeast. The business employs 175 people, operates its own trucking line, and farms more than 2,200 acres of produce.
