VOC wants consumers to ‘V*Inspired’ with marketing campaign
Knowing a good thing when they have one, the Vidalia Onion Committee is sticking with its “V is for Vidalia” marketing campaign through the 2016 season — but with some new twists, including a pair of celebrity chefs who will be making the rounds on behalf of the world’s most famous onion.
This year’s take on the campaign is “V*Inspired” and highlights the versatility and health benefits of Vidalia onions.
“We’ll be featuring the growers and the growing process on our social media sites to educate consumers on where and how Vidalia onions are grown,” said VOC Executive Director Susan Waters. “The growers will share their passion for growing these premium sweet onions and what makes them unique. They’ve got some great stories to tell and we’re looking forward to sharing them.”
Supporting those efforts will be two celebrity chefs.
Whitney Miller is an author and blogger who was the youngest contestant and winner of Fox’s “America’s Masterchef” cook-off series. She is the author of the cookbook Modern Hospitality: Simple Recipes with Southern Charm (Rodale), and most recently her New Southern Table (Harper Collins Christian Publishing). Her recipes have been featured in the “Masterchef” and “Ultimate Masterchef” cookbooks.
Miller will be making guest appearances on the VOC’s social media sites, developing a series of Southern recipes with a modern twist and highlighting Vidalia onions on her blog. She will also be featured on the graphic bin for retailers and her recipes will be included on a point-of-sale tear-off pad that retailers can use on the bin or on the shelf.
The VOC has also teamed up with a 12-year old aspiring chef Lucas Hobbs, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in January 2015. He is now in remission but during his hospital stay he became inspired by the movie “Chef” and programming on The Food Network. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked Lucas for his wish, he requested a food truck to feed the doctors and nurses who cared for him along with the pediatric cancer patients.
Last year, Chef Lucas’s food truck events in Minneapolis got national attention and helped feed thousands. Lucas appeared on “The Rachel Ray Show” and other regional and national news outlets and won a $10,000 scholarship from Sallie Mae.
The VOC has teamed up with the National Turkey Federation to host food truck events in key cities with funds benefiting the non-profit Chef Lucas Food, which aims to serve pediatric cancer patients and their families.
“We are thrilled to have Whitney and Lucas joining us as spokespersons,” Waters said. “Their stories are both inspiring for different reasons and that makes them perfect representatives for the ‘V*Inspired’ campaign.”
