United Marketing Exchange says Western Slope fruit is coming in early and good
Following a light but good overall cherry season, United Marketing Exchange in Delta, CO, was looking ahead to early peaches and, if weather holds, good pears and apples as well.
United Sales Manager Mike Gibson said on June 26 the cherries would be finished by June 29.
“We started shipping on June 12, two weeks early,” Mr. Gibson said.
General Manager Harold Broughton added that the crop “was fantastic until the freeze hit on Easter Sunday.” As a result, the crop was thinned, but Mr. Gibson said size and pricing were good.
“We’ll start [volume] peaches in late July,” Mr. Gibson said, adding that crop is also early by about 10 days.
“It looks good right now,” he said. “It’s not a full crop because some areas had frost.”
Shipments will run until Labor Day week, he said.
Pears also looked good in late June, with Mr. Broughton’s own orchard in Dominguez Canyon northwest of Delta putting out a good crop.
“We’re also getting good pears out of Paonia,” Mr. Gibson said.
“Delta County has a good pear crop overall,” Mr. Broughton said. “It’s hard right now to say if it will be early. The pears may come off sooner than normal, but we just don’t know. We should start Aug. 27.”
He agreed the apple crop is sizing up to be “better than in the past couple of years.”
Mr. Gibson said, “We’ll have a few more Honeycrisps this year, and we’ll have Galas, Golds, Reds, Fujis and Romes.”
In the fall the company will also be in the pumpkin deal.
More of United’s fruit is being shipped to local and regional receivers than in years past, and sales are direct to retail. “We keep all we can in-state,” Mr. Gibson said.
