Sigma Sales now representing Melo label Mexican grapes
RIO RICO, AZ — This spring Sigma Sales Inc. is deepening its involvement in the Mexican grape deal. Mike Smith, president of Sigma Sales, told The Produce News that the size of this trade will “continue to grow in the future.”
The new program is described in a press release as “a first-ever U.S.-bound spring grape deal from Obregon.”
Sigma, which is based in Rio Rico, has partnered with Pablo Borquez to become the exclusive distributors for the Melo and Don Poncho brand Mexican table grapes.
“We’re proud to have joined with the Borquez family. They have a long history as one of the finest growers in Mexico and we look forward to representing their grapes and working together,” Smith said.
“This new area is ideal due to plentiful, pure water and favorable conditions overall. The weather this year has been good, with enough chill hours to ensure a good dormancy.”
Early Sweets are slated to start shipping the first week of May from the fertile Yaqui Valley 160 miles southeast of the established spring grape-growing areas of Hermosillo.
Following the Early Sweets, Sigma will be shipping Melo-label Flames and Sugraones from the Caborca region from May 20 through early July, Smith said in mid-March.
All of the grapes shipped by Sigma are fully GlobalGAP-certified, and through SCS Global have Fair Trade and social responsibility certifications.
