RIO RICO, AZ — Upon becoming a produce grower in 1960, Malu Crespo’s grandfather, Jorge Crespo, chose not to become a mango grower “because it was too easy,” said Malu. “He said, ‘You have a big tree that you water. Then you harvest and take the mangos to the packing shed. It is too easy.’”

“When we were in the peak season, my father used to say, ‘If your grandpa would have known all the hard work we need to do to export the mangos, trust me, he would have exported mangos!’“ Malu noted in late February.

In 1964, Marvin Davis came to Texas to launch a family farm. A half-century later, he and son Mike Davis head up the thriving Tex Mex Sales LLC in Weslaco, TX, which has become a top year-round supplier of red, white and sweet onions from the Davises’ own farms and those of grower-partners.

SuperValu Inc. announced that two of its directors, Mark Neporent and Lenard Tessler, have stepped down from the board of directors effective March 6.

Neporent and Tessler were both appointed to the board in 2013 as designees of Symphony Investors LLC, a Cerberus Capital Management L.P.-led investor consortium, under the terms of the Tender Offer Agreement entered into with Symphony Investors and Cerberus in connection with SuperValu’s sale of five banners to an affiliate of Symphony Investors.

The green beefsteak tomato will lead the way to the start of the 2014 greenhouse production at Nature Fresh Farms in Leamington, ON.

In what has become its most popular event of the year, the Fresh Produce & Floral Council attracted more than 750 participants to its annual Day at the Races activity on Saturday, March 8 at the famous Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, CA.

This family-friendly event featured fun, activities, food and mingling for the whole family. Kids could play in the grassy infield area as adults tried their luck at picking the ponies.

The Texas onion deal will be a little late out of the gate this season but growers will get some help extending that season with a new later start date for Vidalia onion growers.
