PAIA placing focus on retail sales in 2012-13
Helping promote retail sales in the new economy is a primary focus of the Peruvian Asparagus Importer's Association as importers begin the 2012-13 season.
Peru enables U.S. retailers and consumers' access to asparagus at times when domestic supply does not exist since 90 percent of Peru's production is focused when domestic producers are not in season.
In 2011, Peru exported
over 189 million pounds of fresh asparagus to the United States. With an export history dating back 25 years, Peruvian imports continue to be a major source of asparagus for U.S. retailers and their customers.
As Peru launches the 2012-13 season, PAIA importers are partnering with retailers and discussing strategies for promotions for the upcoming summer season.
"Our customers are looking forward to a strong season, especially with the variety of presentations offering strong value for Peruvian asparagus," Chris Martin, co-chairman-West Coast for PAIA and president of Gourmet Trading, based in Los Angeles, said in a press release. "We anticipate stronger sales in the asparagus category as we offer quality product with very promotable volume."
"We project that Peruvian asparagus demand will be solid throughout the summer months and into the peak season," Walter Yager, co-chairman-East Coast and chief executive officer of Alpine Fresh, based in Miami, added in the press release. "Regardless of the dip in volumes, we envision promotable quantity throughout the season."
Priscilla Lleras, coordinator of PAIA, added in the press release, "PAIA diligently and cohesively works with industry and government agencies to advance standards of product quality, cold chain management practices and logistics, so importers can meet customers' requirements to supply consumers with a value, quality and convenience."
The association will focus even greater efforts in 2012 on promoting the product to media, supermarkets and consumers concerning the benefits of fresh asparagus through articles, advertisements, direct-communication and trade show participation. The association anticipates increasing consumption and demand for fresh asparagus during the season.
