This season one of polar opposites for Haun Potato
Dave Haun, president of Haun Potato Co. in Shawnee Mission, KS, said the current potato- and onion-marketing season is one of polar opposites.
The broker-distributor has specialized in potatoes since the 1960s. Most of the volume being marketed by Haun Potato this season comes from the storage crop. “We had awesome growing weather and historically high yields,” he told The Produce News. “We have a burdensome amount of potatoes to move. Prices are cheap. We are running on really high volume of potatoes in the store.”
The situation with onions is another animal. “The storage crop came in late,” he continued. “We’ve hit prices well over $20 f.o.b. on yellow onions. There are fewer onions from Mexico. Texas has cut spring onions, so there is less volume.”
With the day-to-day situation being fluid, the potato veteran summed things up, not unexpectedly, this way: “This business remains like it has always been: unpredictable.”
Haun Potato makes sure its customers receive good-quality potatoes and onions. “We’re real strong here in the Midwest,” Mr. Haun stated. Product is also moved to customers in the Southeast and East. The company provides logistics services to its customers to ensure orders are filled promptly.
