Spice World expands ‘Squeeze Garlic’ line with organic version of product
Spice World Inc.’s organic version of its popular “Squeeze Garlic” product was a natural move for the Orlando, FL-based company.
Louis Hymel, director of purchasing and marketing for Spice World, said that the company has handled organic products for nearly a decade.
“We are completely vertically integrated in the garlic industry — from seed to plate,” said Mr. Hymel. “Our organic line of garlic spans the same wide selection as we offer in our conventional line. We offer organic garlic in a variety of packages and sizes, including bulk, fresh cello or mesh packages, as well as peeled, ready-to-use jarred garlic and, of course, our ‘Squeeze Garlic.’ “
Spice World’s family of ‘Squeeze Garlic’ products.Spice World’s “Squeeze Garlic” in a convenient 20-ounce bottle took the market by storm when it was introduced in 2010. Since then, Spice World has introduced a 9.5-ounce size. Introducing the popular condiment in an organic option was simply the next logical move. And in April 2012, Spice World did just that.
“The majority of our organic garlic is produced in California,” said Mr. Hymel. “However we also handle some imported organic garlic.”
Spice World, he added, has complete diversity in its customer base and distribution.
“Our roots, since 1949, have been in sales and distribution to retail supermarket chains,” he explained. “However, we now also have foodservice and industrial divisions, demonstrating clearly that no sector of the food industry can do without its beloved garlic.”
Spice World markets and distributes nationwide, and it also exports to other countries. Since its founding, the company’s ongoing goal has been to prove that integrity and innovation harvest incredible quality. From the fertile soil of its farm in the San Joaquin Valley in California, to its coast-to-coast distribution and leading-edge processing plants, Spice World aims to the freshest, most flavorful supply of garlic nationwide.
A company that evolves and grows as steadily as Spice World must also keep its operational facilities on the cutting edge. In the past year it has installed new packaging equipment that has helped it to increase its efficiencies.
Mr. Hymel said that the global garlic market is very strong today, with consumers everywhere using the spice as a staple product in their kitchens and foodservice and industrial operators counting on it to add flavor to recipes and prepared foods.
Mr. Hymel said that garlic is one of the produce items that the locally grown trend does not affect strongly because it is commercially produced in only limited areas of the world. And, with the importance of third-party audits and traceability, the garlic market is controlled carefully.
“I believe that different areas, especially rural areas as compared to urban locales, address their customer demands accordingly,” said Mr. Hymel. “Garlic is demanded year round, and locally grown is typically seasonal.
“The effect of locally grown trends is limited, especially with volume items that are demanded consistently,” he continued. “There is a feel-good local support factor, and that is good. But in order to meet demands, industrial agriculture in the most productive growing areas is required.”
