Large volume of avocados assuring year-round quality for Henry
There are sound reasons for optimism about the global avocado situation for 2012-13, which, fittingly, have to do with volume, according to year-round distributor Phil Henry of Henry Avocado in Escondido, CA.
In an Oct. 9 press release, Mr. Henry said that he anticipates the increase in avocados from Mexico, starting this fall will continue a favorable cycle that is benefiting growers, retailers, consumers and foodservice providers year round. “High domestic volume favorably impacts quality throughout the year,” Mr. Henry said in the release. “It allows us to delay the orders to our certified growers in Mexico until their crop is more mature. The more finished the product we receive, the higher the customer satisfaction.”
This product abundance ensures that pumped up demand and promotional opportunities will be met through Super Bowl Sunday and beyond, Mr. Henry noted in the release.
Consumers are doing their part in the equation by responding to the high-quality product with increased individual consumption.
Whatever the genesis, domestic and now offshore growers in Chile and Peru, as well as in Mexico, are seeking ways to maximize their product’s quality and perpetuate the win-win scenario that has recently stimulated every aspect of the year-round avocado deals, the release stated.
In turn, Henry Avocado is expanding its San Antonio, TX, distribution center by adding sales representative Billie Jo Dziewit to the marketing team and adding five ripening rooms this month, for a total of 12 at this location. This addition gives Henry, a ripening pioneer, 54 ripening rooms at its five centers in California, Arizona and Texas.
From its Texas location, Henry Avocado is able to make daily deliveries of its CustomRipe product to customers from Houston to Dallas. “Over the years, our ripening program has dramatically reduced our customers’ shrinkage and has increased impulse buying levels at retail,” Mr. Henry said in the release.
The Henry Avocado distribution center in Texas is primarily served year round with product from Mexico. During the summer months, when volume from Mexico declines, avocados from California, or possibly Peru, fill the void.
“Offering avocados from Mexico, in addition to our California product, provides our customers with choices that have become critical in most markets,” Jon Ullrich, who manages the Texas center, said in the release. “Customers want to grow their sales and the only way they can do it is if they have sufficient superior quality product year round.”
In addition to its San Antonio facility, Henry operates two CustomRipe distribution centers in Escondido and one each in San Jose, CA, and Phoenix. They have a total capacity of almost 600 pallets.
