Giorgio Fresh has strong organic sales in sliced white mushrooms
Bill Litvin, regional sales and national account manager for Giorgio Fresh Company in Temple, PA, said that the company, a grower-shipper of fresh mushrooms, has produced and sold organic mushrooms for many years.
“We sell organic mushrooms in bulk and in overwrap for retail sales,” said Mr. Litvin. “For retail, we sell eight-ounce whole white mushrooms, eight-ounce organic sliced white mushrooms and eight-ounce organic whole Baby Bella mushrooms. Our organic line also includes a six-ounce package of organic Portobello caps, a six-ounce package of organic sliced Portabella caps and a 3.5-ounce package of organic Shiitake mushrooms.”
Giorgio Fresh, Mr. Litvin added, has seen strong sales growth, especially in organic sliced white mushrooms.
The company sells to a wide range of customers, including chain supermarkets, wholesalers, cooperatives, foodservice distributors and industrial accounts.
Mr. Litvin said that in the company’s opinion, organic sales have not been affected by the recession of the past few years. “Giorgio’s organic sales are increasing at double-digit rates,” he said. “We expect this increase to continue despite the economic decline.”
He also noted that according to the Mushroom Council, despite the economic decline, there has been an overall sales growth in the mushroom category, including organic mushroom options.
“We believe this growth will continue in the future,” he said. “Consumers are educating themselves on the benefits of organic produce, and organic options continue to be in high demand.
Giorgio Fresh also announced that it has added to its sales staff. “We are pleased to welcome Carole Opel, regional sales manager, to the Giorgio Fresh Sales team,” said Mr. Litvin. “Carole will be covering the southeast region.”
