The Great Big Idaho Potato Truck to hit the road again in 2013
SUN VALLEY, ID — The Great Big Idaho Potato Truck will keep rolling in 2013.
Frank Muir, president and chief executive officer of the Idaho Potato Commission, announced Aug. 30 during the commission's annual marketing report, here, at the 84th annual Idaho Grower Shipper Association conference, that the wildly popular semi-truck hauling a replica of a giant Idaho russet potato will embark on another cross-country tour in 2013.
The current tour is in month five of a seven-month journey to help promote the "Idaho" brand and raise money for the national Meals on Wheels organization dedicated to help feed senior citizens.
The commission created two television spots to announce the continuation of the tour. The spots are scheduled to debut Aug. 31 on ESPN during the Boise State-Michigan State football game and feature Mark Coombs, a potato grower and an IPC commissioner, beckoning the allegedly AWOL truck and its Tater Team to come home to Idaho. The team, however, appears to be having too much fun traveling the country and interacting with enthusiastic fans. The spots are scheduled to run through February.
Seth Pemsler, vice president of retail and international for the IPC, said that the truck receives a tremendous response wherever it goes and the commission has gotten many requests from retailers to make appearances at store locations around the country.
The 2013 tour is currently scheduled to run from Memorial Day to Labor Day and will look to build on the success of the 2012 tour, which saw the truck stop in 106 cities in 31 states.
