Crown Jewels offers grapes, melons, pomegranates, pears and apples for fall
FRESNO, CA — Crown Jewels Produce Co., here, “will be going hot and heavy on grapes” through the months of August, September, October and November,” said Atomic Torosian, an owner of the company. “Our tonnage is up a little bit this year,” quality is better than last year, and movement has been good.
Currently, “we are phasing into the middle stages of the grape deal,” Mr. Torosian said Aug. 7. From late summer through fall, “we will be harvesting Princess, Crimson, Autumn Royal, Red Globe, Vintage Red, Sweet Scarlet, Scarlet Royal and Autumn King. Those are the varieties that we will be packing on grapes.”
In addition to grapes, Crown Jewels is involved in other California fruit items.
“We are getting into the late summer and early fall mode with cantaloupes and honeydews,” Mr. Torosian said. “We are going real steady.”
For the fourth year in a row, Crown Jewels is representing the “King Crow” label from Perez Packing Inc. in Firebaugh, CA. “Quality of the melons this year is very good, Mr. Torosian said. Cantaloupes were peaking on 9s and 12s, and honeydews were peaking on 5s and 6s.
New for the company this year is a pomegranate deal that starts in August with the Foothill variety, followed by a progression of other varieties including Early Wonderful and Wonderful. “That should start around the last week of August” and continue through November, he said.
Apples and pears are “a big portion of what Crown Jewels does,” Mr. Torosian said. As in previous years, “we represent Greene & Hemly in Courtland [CA] on ‘Tradition’ label pears and apples.”
The Bartlett season was underway, “but we should be finished by the end of September on Bartletts,” he said. “We are just starting up with [Golden] Bosc pears,” which should go through November.
Crown Jewels will have specialty pear varieties such as Comice, Seckle, Forelle, Taylor’s Gold and Stark Crimson.
California apple varieties handled by Crown Jewels are Gala, Granny Smith, Braeburn, Fuji and Pink Lady.
“We are going through our Gala harvest right now and will probably finish up harvesting Galas by the 10th of September,” he said.
Granny Smith will start late August, followed by Braeburn and Fuji in early September. Its Pink Lady variety starts Oct. 8-10. “We are looking for a very active California apple deal this year. I underscore active, because there should be good demand all the way through.”
