NewStar rolling out new items at PMA convention
Salinas, CA-based NewStar Fresh Foods LLC will introduce several new items at the Produce Marketing Association's Fresh Summit in Atlanta.
NewStar's sleeved asparagus, which has been under development for a year, is set for a Jan. 1 national rollout, said John Killeen, the company's vice president of sales and marketing.
From both handling and food-safety standpoints, the sleeve is a plus, Mr. Killeen said.
"The bag keeps [asparagus] hydrated," Mr. Killeen said. "People handle the bag, not the product."
NewStar's 48-count iceless green onions liner adds to the company's iceless offerings.
"Growth has been on the iceless side," Mr. Killeen said, adding that NewStar is an industry leader in iceless products. Two years ago, most product was iced, but there's a greater percentage all the time that is iceless, he said. Also new to the company also is a three-pound spring mix. "With constraints on freight, people can pick it up here," Mr. Killeen said. "It ties in with our light leaf program."
The company also is introducing an iceless 15-pound long- top green onion. From the foodservice standpoint, they can get more of the green part of the onion, he said.
