Dragonberry Produce’s 20th Century pears
Dragonberry Produce Inc. has gained a reputation for providing its customers with sometimes unusual, but always exciting fresh produce offerings. Sales Executive Amy Nguyen said 20th Century pears are one of the commodities that has created such a strong foundation for the specialty boutique-style company located in Clackamas, OR. “The 20th Century pears we market have a delicate skin,” Ms. Nguyen said. “Our growers take the same care with these as they would with berries.”
This is the
sixth season Dragonberry, which works with two growers in Hood River, OR, has marketed 20th Century pears.
“This year, we will have 30 percent more volume than last year,” she said. “Last year, we had that really weird weather that affected blossoms on the tree. This year, weather has been better for pears.”
The company sells 20th Century pears primarily to wholesalers and distributors in the Pacific Northwest and along the West Coast.
Because of the pear’s high Brix level, Ms. Nguyen said it cannot be stored, and most of the pears are sold domestically during a six-month period. “This is a juicy, crisp pear,” Ms. Nguyen said. “It’s not grainy.”
In addition to pears, Dragonberry Produce markets a host of fresh vegetables and fruits, including another specialty item, the Green Dragon apple.
