Roger Meloche attends 54 years of QPMA golf tournaments
Roger Meloche was among the 64 players to participate in the first ever QPMA golf tournament on July 27, 1956 at the Ste-Agathe Golf Course and he’s been attending ever since. On July 20, QPMA hosted its 54th annual golf tournament and of course, Mr. Meloche was there and ready to play.
George Pitsikoulis of Canadawide, Roger Meloche and Sophie Perreault, executive director of QPMA.“It’s grown over the years, there are now over 270 players that come out,” Mr. Meloche said. When asked about the most memorable golf tournament to date, he said, “They are all memorable because every year there are new participants, people to meet. For one day, friends, colleagues, and maybe perhaps even some fierce competitors, put business aside to meet amicably as friends.”
Mr. Meloche began his career in the rail industry, supervising fruit and vegetable shipments at the Windsor station. In 1960, broker Georges Elhenry asked Mr. Meloche to join his company. In 1962, Mr. Meloche bought the company [renamed Roger Meloche], which he presided until 1983. In 1983, Mr. Meloche sold his company to Labatt and began consulting.
“I continued on as a consultant for Labatt as well as other companies including A. Duda and Sons from 1983–2005. I was a broker and sold for many U.S. companies. I was among the first to import Holland peppers,” Mr. Meloche said. “Did you know, I’m still working to this day? I handle collections every Friday for Gargiulo [Naples, FL-based Gargiulo Inc.]. I love visiting the different companies and saying hello to all the employees when I come by to pick up the checks.”
Debby Morrison of Gargiulo shared her thoughts about Mr. Meloche. “On a personal note, he [Mr. Meloche] is a wonderful gentleman who is very knowledgeable about Canadian customers and gives good advice,” she said.
Mr. Meloche said that’s what this industry is all about — the people. “From your newest employee, right to the top, everyone is important and plays a key role in a business. I make it a point to say hello to all the staff when I come by,” he shared.
“That’s what this golf tournament and QPMA is about as well, strengthening connections,” Mr. Meloche added. “Everyone should join the association [QPMA] and participate in the events. People bring new guests to the golf tournament every year and while I may know 90 percent of the participants, I still want to meet the other 10 percent.”
