Frescadel helps industry package produce
Frescadel is a division of Canadawide specializing in consumer packaging of fruit. Frescadel uses a Modified Atmosphere Packaging to extend the shelf life of the product. This helps reduce loss and extends the reach of distribution. Frescadel uses MAP to extend the shelf life of commodities such as Brussel sprouts, snow peas, cherry tomatoes and kumquats.
“We also package other products that do not require the MAP system,” said Fernande Bernier of Canadawide — Frescadel. “These include hot peppers, stone fruit including peaches and nectarines as well as kiwis, all in clamshells.”
Frescadel is also expanding the line to include packaging of organic products. “The line of organics will be packaged using renewable sources and bio-degradable materials. We’re helping to reduce waste as the packaging is recyclable and made from palm leaves,” said Ms. Bernier.
The packaging center includes a dedicated core staff that has been with the company for many years. The newly built Canadawide — Frescadel facilities that will be in use as of this summer will implement and maintain the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point system. The new facilities will allow Frescadel to prewash products on site, ready to eat for consumer convenience.
“I enjoy my work,” said Ms. Bernier. “There’s no monotony, it’s always changing and I adapt well to change. I enjoy the challenge of introducing new packaging products to the market, we’re helping the industry by controlling the starting point of the product getting to market,” she concluded.
