Brooks Tropicals earns food-safety certifications for starfruit
Brooks Tropicals LLC, based in Homestead, FL, achieved food-safety certified audits across the board for its starfruit category.
Reaching near-perfect scores, Brooks' food-safety audits were performed by PrimusLabs for the firm's starfruit groves, harvesting crews, packinghouse and storage facility.
"Food safety is priority one at Brooks Tropicals," Greg Smith, chief executive officer for Brooks Tropicals, said in a press release. "It's more than excelling at audits, it's about building a culture where every employee acts as a food-safety inspector and is proud to perform the duty."
"We're proud of the results, which reflects our company-wide efforts in this arena," Peter Leifermann, director of sales and fruit procurement for Brooks, added in the press release.
These starfruit audits and the Superior scores add to Brooks Tropicals' roster of other high-scoring food-safety audits for its SlimCado avocado and Caribbean Red papaya fields, harvesting crews, packinghouses and storage facilities.
Brooks Tropicals has grown starfruit (or carambola) for over 50 years on the west coast of Florida on Pine Island. The fruit is grown under screening to mimic the dense canopy of trees it grows under in its native soils of Asia. Florida starfruit is typically sweeter than Asian varieties.
