T&A's Mike Antle takes on harvest responsibilities
SALINAS, CA -- Tanimura & Antle Inc., based in Spreckles, CA, has announced that Mike Antle has become vice president of harvest in addition to continuing to serve as an executive vice president of the company.
Mr. Antle will assume responsibility for all harvest operations of T&A and will report to President and COO Ken Silveira.
Working closely with Steve Bassi, senior vice president of agriculture operations, Mr. Antle will provide leadership in a role he has held previously.
Mr. Antle began working with T&A when the Tanimura and Antle families first opened the business in 1982. He was a recent graduate of Colorado State University with a bachelor's degree in horticultural food crop production. His title at the time was harvesting supervisor and he held the position until around 1996 when the company started its bagged salad business and transitioned from a family-owned business into more of a corporate structure.
While harvesting supervisor, he and his family followed the harvest season, migrating between Yuma, AZ, and Salinas, helping to set the foundation for what T&A is today. Brian Hunt opted to become T&A's director of farming operations in Yuma, AZ, thus vacating the vice president of harvest position. Mr. Antle then threw his hat in the ring to get back into harvest operations.
Throughout his years of service with the company, he has been instrumental in its agricultural management.
He has also been a champion of T&A's employees, promoting among other things a scholarship program, the "Welcome to Our World" educational camp for seventh-, eighth-, ninth- and 10th-grade sons and daughters of T&A employees, the Child Development Center, and employee benefits, pay and working conditions.
Mr. Antle said that he is the only owner of the company who is bilingual and that his Spanish-language skills have provided an avenue for communication with employees. The company has a policy in place for employees to bring complaints and concerns first to a foreman, then to a supervisor and ultimately all the way up to Mr. Antle. He said functioning in that role has been valuable for the company.
Mr. Antle is a community leader, and was recently honored by Junior Achievement of Silicon Valley & Monterey Bay, which inducted him into its 2005 Monterey Bay Business Hall of Fame. He also has served with the Grower-Shipper Association of Central California, Monterey County Agricultural Education, the Monterey County General Plan, Lyceum and the Competitive Clusters Project of the Monterey Business Council.
"I am delighted to have Mike rejoin our operating team as head of harvest operations," said Mr. Silveira. "Mike will build on the outstanding foundation and strength brought to harvest by Vince Brigantino and Brian Hunt, both of whom have moved on to other management responsibilities for T&A. Mike is a gifted, hard-working individual. He exemplifies for our company, our employees and community the best in responsible, fair, effective leadership. It's great to work with him."
