R.B. Sandrini’s grape line is a mix of newer and traditional varieties
R.B. Sandrini Inc. in Delano, CA, which is the sales agent for R.B. Sandrini Farms L.P., offers about 14 different varieties of table grapes, ranging from traditional industry mainstays such as Flame seedless and Thompson to some of the popular newer varieties, and even to some cutting edge varieties so new that the company doesn’t even want to give out information on them yet.
“We have grafted some varieties over, and we have planted some of the newer varieties as well, some that we anticipate will have excellent flavor, very good edibility and good shelf life,” said Christopher (Chris) Gardella, a salesman for the company. “We are focusing on increasing the acreage on those varieties at this time.”
Among the new varieties being grown by R.B. Sandrini are a couple of red seedless varieties “that we are bringing aboard this season. That is about as specific as I want to get,” Mr. Gardella said.
“We are also taking a look at some newer green varieties as an option for increasing our acreage this coming season,” he said.
“We are looking at some early season greens and some mid-season reds and maybe some late-season reds as an option for expanding our availability for those time periods and improving our product mix as well,” he said.
But it is not just about varieties. “We have put a lot of time and resources in developing the quality of our fruit and also upgrading the quality of our packs.”
In that vein, the company is offering “several new labels” such as “Primo Dolce” and “Gourmet Harvest,” Mr. Gardella said. “So we are upgrading our packing accordingly, to accommodate those labels.”
The company has also “taken on some more personnel” in operations and in sales support “to improve our service here,” he said. “There is a big push here to improve our operations and our product at all levels.”
The 2012 harvest for R.B. Sandrini was expected to get underway the week of July 16 with Flame Seedless, Summer Royal and a few Sugraones.
“Then we will move into our later variety green grapes as we move forward through the season, which will include Thompson, Princess, Luisco and Autumn Kings,” he said. “In addition, we have about six or seven varieties of red grapes which will take us into December” as well as “a few varieties of blacks.”
Among the red grapes are Scarlet Royal and Crimson, both seedless, as well as the seeded Red globe.
“We are very optimistic about the crop this year,” Mr. Gardella said.
“We are not having some of the problems we had last year in the fields. I think we are looking at a very good crop size” but not a bumper crop, and a “potentially vintage crop” providing the weather “cooperates with us as we move through the harvest.”
