No rush to fill IBA post
No rush to fill IBA post
There will be no rush to fill the position recently vacated by Tim Debus, who recently resigned from the International Banana Association to take a position with IFCO Systems.
The IBA contracted with United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association in Washington, DC, to manage the banana group when Robert Moore retired in 1999 after heading the IBA for decades.
Tom Stenzel, president of United, told The Produce News Oct. 12 that IBA chose to have a large organization like United involved in its management so that the banana association wouldn't be so heavily dependent on one person. Mr. Debus was an employee of United, and Mr. Stenzel said he spent almost all of his time on IBA issues, and that IBA always enjoyed the support and expertise of the entire United staff.
Now, with the departure of Mr. Debus, Mr. Stenzel said, "I am continuing the IBA activities," adding that specific IBA queries are delegated to Uniteds specialists.
While we may bring someone on board in the future to have primary responsibility for the IBA post, Mr. Stenzel said, we are not in a hurry and may not fill the role at all, but rather continue the team-management approach as it now stands. We will look at this with the IBA board, and for now will keep things going the way they are.
