Morari set to debut baby eggplants
Morari Specialties Inc., which introduced baby cucumbers to the United States last year, is poised to launch another specialty produce item for consumers: baby eggplants. These new specialty items, grown and imported exclusively by Morari, will be available year-round in select retail stores at the end of July.
Like its baby cucumbers, Morari's baby eggplants offer a healthier, more convenient alternative to popular high-fat snack items. The baby eggplants, which are roughly the size of an egg, are less bitter than their "adult" counterparts and contain less seeds and water, making them ideal for cooking.
The eggplants offer a bounty of nutritional benefits: They contain no fat, cholesterol or sodium; they are low in carbs and high in fiber; and one pound of baby eggplants (roughly eight to 10 pieces) contains only 60 calories. Suggested recipes will be available on the back of the 16-ounce clamshell packaging, as well as in a full-color recipe booklet that the Doral, FL-based company is producing for direct mail and in-store demonstrations.
"Consumers want convenience, and our baby eggplants offer exactly that: there's no peeling or draining needed, and because of their size, there is less waste, said Aram Shah, Morari's chief operating officer. "The packaging makes it a one-stop 'grab-and-go' from the shelf to the cart to the kitchen.
The baby eggplants are grown at Morari Farms in Honduras, and will be available year-round through the company's extensive distribution network. Beginning in late July, the eggplants will be available at Whole Foods and at Ukrop's (a grocery store chain in central Virginia), where they will be displayed in the produce section with other pre-packaged baby vegetables.
For the first four months, Morari will run a $1 off promotion as well as a demo program to introduce the new item to the public. Morari also has plans to launch a web site, www.babyeggplants.com, which will offer more information on the new product.
