Fire damages Brandt cold storage facility
A fire at the Brandt Farms Inc. cold storage facility in Reedley, CA, on the morning of Wednesday, June 15, damaged the facility's main cold room and caused the loss of a considerable amount of inventory, according to Dave Maddux, a salesman with the company. No one was hurt, he said.
The fire, apparently caused by an electrical problem, began about 6 a.m. "Somebody saw it right away." By the time the fire department arrived about 15 minutes later, it had burned the back wall of the facility and smoked out our main cold storage room, so we lost a little inventory a lot, I guess. We had to cancel a few orders.
Some packed fruit was transferred to a commercial cold storage facility and is being shipped from there.
The damaged room was the largest of four cold rooms in the Brandt facility. The other three, which have separate refrigeration systems, are still operating, Mr. Maddux said.
The fire caused the facility to lose power temporarily, but portable generators were quickly brought in to restore power.
We started on schedule this morning packing peaches, so we havent slowed down a bit, he said. The packingline is located on the opposite end of the facility from where the fire started.
