Sustainability has always been at the heart of Bee Sweet Citrus
Bee Sweet Citrus has long made sustainability a defining part of its identity, and the company's commitment to transparency around that effort is equally important. J.D. Freitas, sustainability manager at Bee Sweet Citrus, said environmental and social sustainability are crucial to the company's operations, with efforts covering water conservation, soil health, biodiversity, waste reduction and energy efficiency.
Apart from environmental impact, Bee Sweet Citrus is determined to maintain the wellbeing of its workforce. The company has partnered with United Health Centers to develop a Wellness Program, allowing employees and their dependents to visit any local UHC clinic for a nominal co-pay, covering basic health, dental, chiropractic, behavioral health and eye exam needs. UHC also hosts on-site health clinics throughout the year to further support employee wellness across the facility, and the program is provided in addition to existing employee insurance. Bee Sweet Citrus has also recently established its Safety Committee, an 11 member team dedicated to fostering a proactive, safe workplace that aims to assist the company's safety initiatives. "The committee actively identifies potential hazards, promotes best safety practices, and drives employee engagement at every level of the organization," said Freitas. "By recognizing outstanding teams each quarter, the committee cultivates a culture of safety, teamwork, and inclusivity across Bee Sweet Citrus."
The sustainability initiative at Bee Sweet Citrus extends to both the farm and the facility. Freitas said farm stewardship efforts include GlobalG.A.P. audits, integrated pest management and improving soil quality through cover crops and composting. The packing plant has prioritized solar power, skylights and LED lighting to reduce energy consumption, and is committed to cutting packaging waste. He stressed that "recycling within our internal operations is also a key priority — last year alone, we recycled over 1.37 million pounds of cardboard and paper at our facility."
Water efficiency is a particular focus given California's growing conditions. Bee Sweet Citrus uses drip and micro sprinkler irrigation to reduce water usage and plants cover crops to prevent farmland erosion. Freitas said the company recycles water from cold storage for landscaping, uses low volume spray nozzles on wash lines and relies on soil probes for precise moisture monitoring in the field. He added that Bee Sweet Citrus regularly assesses soil health to maximize water retention and further reduce its environmental impact, with these efforts working together to support more sustainable farming across all of its growing operations.
Packaging innovation is becoming an increasing priority for Bee Sweet Citrus as Extended Producer Responsibility laws continue to reshape the agricultural landscape. Freitas said the team is "proactively reviewing packaging materials and processes to stay ahead of evolving regulations and ensure full compliance." Bee Sweet Citrus has also developed internal KPIs to track sustainability progress and is planning to join the Science Based Targets initiative to set long term emissions goals, with the broader focus remaining on reducing the water, energy and emissions needed to produce each pound of fruit as the company continues to grow.
