HTA opens applications for new non-executive directors
The Horticultural Trades Association is recruiting three new non-executive directors to its board. The roles offer HTA members the opportunity to help shape the strategy and direction of the trade body representing U.K. environmental horticulture.
The roles come at a time of growing importance for the sector, with gardens, green spaces and managed landscapes playing an increasingly vital role in the U.K.’s economy, environment and well-being. The HTA is seeking individuals who can bring strategic judgment, sector insight and constructive challenge to its board.
In line with governance requirements, applications are open only to candidates employed by organizations with active HTA membership. Successful candidates must maintain that membership for the duration of their term.
“This is an opportunity for people from across our membership to step into a leadership role and help shape the future of our industry," said Will Armitage, HTA president. "We’re looking for individuals who can think strategically, bring fresh perspectives and provide both support and challenge as we continue to evolve and deliver for our members.”
Non-executive directors play a key role in overseeing governance and helping shape the HTA’s long-term direction. Working alongside the executive team, they will contribute an independent perspective to board discussions, help ensure the organization remains focused on delivering value to members, and act as ambassadors for the sector.
The roles are voluntary (with expenses reimbursed), and appointments are for a three-year term, with the potential for renewal. Directors are expected to attend four board meetings and one AGM each year and to participate in occasional strategy sessions or committee work.
The HTA is particularly interested in candidates who bring board-level or senior leadership experience, alongside expertise in areas such as commercial horticulture, garden retail, landscaping, finance, technology, governance or membership organizations. However, the association encourages applications from across its membership, valuing passion, integrity and real-world experience as highly as formal qualifications.
Candidates should be able to think strategically, ask the right questions, and contribute to robust decision-making while bringing a collaborative, forward-looking approach. A strong interest in member representation, sustainability and sector growth will be essential.
In return, non-executive directors will gain board-level experience, access to formal non-executive director training by an accredited body, build networks across the industry, and contribute to a sector about which they are passionate. The recruitment forms part of the HTA’s ongoing succession planning, both to fill upcoming vacancies and to build a strong and diverse pipeline of future board talent.
The HTA represents about 1,400 businesses comprising retailers, growers, manufacturers, wholesalers, landscapers and garden designers. Its work includes political advocacy, market insight and commercial initiatives such as the National Garden Gift Scheme, which drives about 2 million visits to garden centers each year.
To apply, candidates should send a CV and cover letter to [email protected] by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with interviews expected to take place in early June.
