Market Minute: New pear crop a perfect fit for promotions
The Northwest pear harvest has made a tremendous comeback from last year’s crop and is back on its feet with a 60 percent increase over 2024 — with the entire U.S. pear crop estimated at a 22 percent increase. So get ready to run some exciting retail pear promotional ads now through Christmas. Then continue to promote pears into the winter months, as the abundant high-volume yield will be available to support further ads.
Washington, Oregon and California will be shipping some outstanding quality pears in all varieties. The ideal time to promote pears is during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods.
The current pear demand is moderate with a steady market out of Washington, Oregon and California. Now is a good time to get those pear displays set up and advertised in order to invite your shoppers to buy plenty of them. Set up an end cap or free-standing display giving it a good visual presentation. Even though Bartlett and Anjou pears are the primary sales contributors, stock it with all varieties and a good color contrast. Also add organic pears to complete the set.
Check with the Pear Bureau Northwest and your pear suppliers for some merchandising support. Be aggressive in going after those pear sales.
