Philadelphia trade weathers rain for annual golf tournament
MEDFORD, NJ -- The Philadelphia wholesale produce community met June 3 for the fourth annual Lou Penza Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament at the Medford Village Country Club, here, and while rain throughout the day certainly dampened the course, there were only four no-shows as 76 golfers attended.
Freddie Penza of Pinto Bros. in Philadelphia said that the tournament was named for his late uncle, who, with other Philadelphia produce members, coordinated the tournament for 25 years. The tournament originally carried the banner of the Philadelphia chapter of the United Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Association.
Receiving a $5,000 contribution as a result of money raised by the tournament is the Convent House, which is associated with Philadelphia's Fox Chase Cancer Center. The money will revitalize an apartment next door to the cancer center, and families of cancer patients will be allowed to stay in the apartment while visiting sick family members.
Mr. Penza said that an additional contribution will be given to a second charity yet to be determined.
