Market Basket fills vacant CEO role — for now
Market Basket has named Donald T. Mulligan, its longtime chief financial officer, as interim CEO following last week's firing of then-CEO Arthur T. Demoulas. Mulligan has worked for the retailer for the past 42 years.
“Don Mulligan is the voice of consistency at Market Basket, one that our associates and customers can count on to proudly continue the same thriving culture and the ‘More For Your Dollar’ shopping experience," said Board Chair Jay K. Hachigian. "The board has worked closely with Mr. Mulligan and has come to appreciate his exceptional business acumen, the respect and admiration our associates have for him, and his deep understanding of the history and culture that make Market Basket so special,”
Mulligan began his career at Sullivan Bille PC, a Tewksbury accounting firm, where he worked on the Market Basket account. There he became acquainted with Telemachus (Mike) Demoulas, who hired him full-time in 1983.
Over the past 42 years, Mulligan worked his way up in the company, being promoted to chief financial officer in 1999 — a position he has held for the past 26 years. As a Lowell, MA, native, Mulligan graduated from Lowell High School and the University of Lowell (later UMass Lowell).
“We are thrilled to have a homegrown leader of Mr. Mulligan’s caliber step into the role of Interim CEO to guide Market Basket and ensure seamless leadership for our associates, customers, and communities,” Hachigian said.
