Market Minute: Calif. melons ready for ad promotions
There is an abundance of different melon varieties. The most popular are cantaloupes, honeydews and watermelons. However, there are other choices available, such as Crenshaw, Persian, Canary, Galia — and actually thousands of watermelon varieties as well.
Dan Avakian, better known as, Dan The Produce Man, said, “Plenty of states grow a wide variety of melons, and when summer hits its stride, the fields across America come alive with color, aroma and flavor. California is a prime melon paradise.”
The current California cantaloupe and honeydew demand is moderate with a steady market. Western watermelons have a slightly lower market and moderate demand. Texas watermelon demand is moderate with a steady market while eastern watermelons are in good demand with about a steady market.
“The best time to promote these melons is from mid-summer through early fall," said Avakian. "The longer they’re on the vine, the more sugar they develop. Keep an eye out — new varieties and heirloom surprises pop up often, especially in California’s organic melon fields. When in doubt, follow your nose. The best melons don’t just look good; they smell like summer.”
Massive displays of all varieties of melons are the best way to sell larger amounts to boost sales. So set up those displays now through the fall season and enjoy sales and profits to meet those produce budgets.
