Giorgio Fresh offers mushroom grill packs, expanding value-added options
Giorgio Fresh continues to innovate with value-added mushroom products designed to spark ideas in home kitchens with the convenience that time-pressed consumers seek.
At the same time, Giorgio Fresh is helping consumers expand their meal options with numerous recipes on its website. Consumers can search for recipes by mushroom type, meal occasion, seasonality and more — and a variety of downloadable e-cookbooks offer curated mushroom recipes that include vegetarian, classic American and exotic mushroom dishes.
One of Giorgio Fresh’s goals is to educate consumers on mushrooms and cooking through the website, said Bryan Shelton, vice president of sales and marketing for the Temple, PA-based grower-shipper.
“Mushrooms can be intimidating for some home cooks, so Giorgio provides resources — recipes, tips and nutritional info — to build confidence,” Shelton said. “Recipes help simplify the preparation process and inspire consumers to use mushrooms in everyday meals, from pasta to stir-fries to grilling.”
Value-added products also ease younger consumers into the category, with the benefit of cutting prep time.
“They make it easier to integrate mushrooms into meals without much prep,” Shelton said. “Millennials and Gen Z are especially drawn to these items, as are dual-income households seeking quick meal solutions.”
Giorgio Fresh recently expanded its value-added offerings with Sliced Mushroom Grill Packs, available in three options: Smokey Honey Habanero with Crimini, King Oyster and Lion’s Mane mushrooms; Steak Seasoning with Crimini mushrooms; and Brown Sugar Bourbon with Crimini and shiitake mushrooms. Each pack has a foil tray that can be placed directly on a grill.
“They’re designed to meet demand for quick-prep, flavorful sides and to inspire new ways of enjoying mushrooms — especially during grilling season,” Shelton said. “Giorgio is also continually exploring new flavors and packaging formats to meet evolving consumer needs.”
Stuffed mushrooms and sauté kits
Giorgio Fresh’s Stuffed Baby Bella Mushroom line features six stuffed mushrooms in a microwavable tray, with six options: Cheese & Imitation Bacon Bits, Fiesta Cheese Blend, Crab Seasoning Flavored Cheese, Artichoke, Spinach & Cheese Blend, Everything Seasoned and Garlic Parmesan.
“Consumer response has been positive — these items deliver on both flavor and convenience, and Giorgio continues to monitor trends to keep the lineup fresh and relevant,” Shelton said.
In 2024, the company launched two Savory Sauté Kits, featuring Garlic Butter and Tomato Chipotle Butter options. The kits have sliced mushrooms and flavored butter. Consumers just add the kit contents to a skillet and sauté for a few minutes.
Shelton said the kits have resonated particularly well with busy professionals and younger consumers.
“There is interest in expanding the line as Giorgio tracks flavor trends and consumer feedback,” he said.
Variety, innovation key to retail
Convenience and an array of flavors help boost sales at retail, but whole and sliced options, as well as exotic mushrooms, are must-haves to boost the category.
“Consumers expect choice, and a well-rounded mushroom section — offering various formats and varieties — is seen as a sign of a high-quality fresh department,” Shelton said. “Giorgio recommends retailers include sliced and whole options across core white and brown mushrooms, along with at least a few specialty or exotic selections, to drive basket size and meet diverse needs.”
Sales of specialty mushrooms, such as shitake, oyster and maitake, are growing as consumers become more adventurous and health conscious. White and brown mushrooms, however, continue to represent the bulk of Giorgio Fresh sales, he said.
