NWA inducts Florida legend into Hall of Fame
AUSTIN, TX — Raymond Land, a founding father of the Florida Watermelon Association and a past president of the National Watermelon Association, was inducted into the NWA Hall of Fame at the 110th annual NWA convention, here.
Land, who began loading boxcars of watermelons at age 16, built a family business along with his wife, Annette, who also has deep roots in the watermelon industry. Today, the family operates Raymond J. Land Watermelon Sales and Land Truck Brokers, and also continues to grow watermelon and raise cattle.
Over the years, Land adapted to industry changes, from shipping by rail to modern trucking, from bulk loads to boxes and from seeded to seedless watermelons.
He also served as president of the Florida Watermelon Association from 1978 to 1980 and led the National Watermelon Association as president from 1984 to 1985, and set the stage for other family members’ leadership roles in the industry. His sons, Jody and Adrian, serve on the board of the Florida Watermelon Association, and Jody was NWA president in 2003. Land’s daughter-in-law Laura also served as FWA president, and grandson Adrian II is currently second vice president at FWA.
Often seen in a cowboy hat and boots, with an occasional cigar, Land is known for his warm personality, infectious laughter and the ability to make anyone feel like family, according to NWA.
