New York Apple Association focusing on wellness and innovation at SEPC
The New York Apple Association will be returning to the Southeast Produce Council’s Southern Exposure show for its third-consecutive year, eager to build connections and strengthen its presence in the fresh produce industry.
“The conference is an excellent opportunity for NYAA to meet with buyers, merchandisers, industry leaders and the fresh produce industry overall,” said Cynthia Haskins, president and CEO of NYAA.
At the show this year, NYAA will be located at booth No. 621, where visitors will be introduced to a range of New York’s apple varieties.
“NYAA has an array of spring promotions planned, ensuring that consumers have access to New York apples year-round,” Haskins said.
One key theme that will drive conversations at SEPC this year is “Making America Healthy Again.”
“NYAA is dedicated to helping consumers make healthier choices by incorporating apples into their diets,” Haskins said. “As America begins to take a serious look at how we can make the country healthy again, we have an opportunity to capture consumers’ attention in a bigger way. After all, the fresh produce department is typically the first department a consumer sees when they enter the grocery store. This presents an opportunity for the apple industry to implement innovative merchandising strategies to enhance the apple shopping experience and drive sales.”
The NYAA is focusing on wellness with its newly launched campaign, Wellness Never Tasted So Good — New York State Apples, which aligns with the growing trend of food is medicine and the rise of plant-forward diets.
“We believe these, and other themed initiatives, are gaining traction and we are preparing new recipes that deliver on taste and nutrition,” Haskins said.
To help amplify the message, NYAA is working with Kelly Springer, a registered dietitian and nutrition spokesperson, to develop healthy recipes and share nutritional advice. Through social media and e-newsletters, NYAA will provide consumers with information on apple varieties, flavor profiles, and healthy recipes that support a balanced diet.
“We have acquired a large database of consumers who have signed up to learn more about NYAA’s recipes and New York State’s diverse apple varieties,” Haskins said.
Attending the SEPC show is an important networking opportunity for NYAA, and the association sees it as an essential part of their business growth.
“NYAA works closely with retailers and wholesalers on customized promotions,” Haskins said. “Having the opportunity to touch base with so many buyers in one day is an efficient use of everyone’s time and resources.”
NYAA is excited to discuss new promotional strategies for the upcoming year.
“We have seen an increased interest in digital coupon programs and BOGO promotions this year,” Haskins said. “Consumers, especially families, are looking for healthy snacks for their children, and BOGOs provide value that’s packed with delicious nutrition.”
Looking ahead, NYAA is already working on promotions for the 2025 fall harvest. Its commitment to innovation and growth remains strong as the organization plans new crop season promotions for the upcoming months.
“As the NYAA looks to the future, our growth initiatives continue to prioritize health and wellness,” Haskins said. “The association is committed to showing consumers that New York apples are a healthy and convenient choice. We are dedicating more resources to our website, social media platforms, and campaigns focused on health and wellness.”
Additionally, through engaging digital content and strategic partnerships, NYAA is working to raise awareness of New York’s diverse apple varieties and position them as a healthy, convenient snack. Their focus on educating consumers and providing easy access to deliciously healthy apple recipes is poised to drive long-term growth and strengthen their connection with consumers.
