Sun World names three new stone fruit marketer-licensees
Sun World International LLC, headquartered in Bakersfield, CA, has named three distributors as licensed marketers of its new stone fruit lines.
South Africa's Capespan Exports (Pty) Ltd. and Green Marketing International (Pty) Ltd, and Chiles Gesex S.A. are now eligible to export the new plum, apricot, peach and nectarine varieties grown by licensed Sun World producers, Sun World Senior Vice President David Marguleas announced May 24.
"These three international fruit companies bring broad distribution strength, solid supply relationships and rich marketing expertise to our expanding international licensee network," Mr. Marguleas said in a statement.
The three new appointments round out Sun Worlds Southern Hemisphere stone fruit marketer licensing structure, whereby fruit from producers in Australia, Chile, South Africa and New Zealand will now be handled by two companies from each country.
The new stone fruit licensees join Chilean exporter Dole Chile S.A., Australian marketers Montague Fresh and Panda Ranch Marketing Pty. Ltd., as well as New Zealand marketers Yummy Fruit Co. and Fresh NZ 2000 Ltd.
The eight marketer licensees will distribute stone fruit grown by Sun World producers under a managed planting system in each of the three Southern Hemisphere countries.
The stone fruit to be marketed includes a wide range of plums such as several black-skinned, red-flesh varieties marketed under the companys renowned Black Diamond brand; a broad line of black-skinned yellow-flesh plums marketed under the Black Giant brand; a series of early-ripening apricots distributed under the Honeycot brand; and a line of early-ripening peaches marketed under the Amber Crest brand.
Sun Worlds California-based research and development center has released dozens of stone fruit varieties, many of which are grown and sold under private trademarks and brands. These products complement Sun Worlds line of seedless grapes, which are produced and marketed under similar license arrangements around the world.
Sun World has established a fruit licensing program that involves more than 1,000 producers and leading marketing companies in most of the worlds major fruit-growing regions.
The companys new variety development work focuses on a full range of fresh plums as well as on early-season apricots, peaches and nectarines, with extraordinary characteristics such as enhanced flavor, distinctive taste, larger fruit, earlier and later ripening times and availability, and increased productivity. The company also develops new seedless grapes for its own production and for other growers to produce under license.
Similar grape marketer appointments have been made in Chile, Australia and South Africa. Sun World is in the process of licensing key grape and stone fruit marketers for each of the Northern Hemispheres major fruit regions.
Sun World, a longstanding producer and marketer of fresh fruit, operates one of the worlds larger table grape and stone fruit breeding programs. Since its inception in the 1970s, the companys research and development center has released more than 80 new varieties with improved flavor, size, color, shelf-life and extended seasonality. In addition to production on its own California properties, Sun World and/or its licensees grow these proprietary varieties in Australia, New Zealand, North America, Europe, South America, the Middle East and South Africa.
