Pommes Ma-gic slices into eastern Canadian convenience store market
ST.-LEONARD, QC -- A new partnership between Pommes Ma-gic and Aliments Martel will see the former's sliced apples being distributed at gasoline station convenience stores across eastern Canada.
Sebastien Alix, Pommes Ma-gic's general manager, told The Produce News about the new partnership at the Quebec Produce Marketing Association's Oyster Party, held here Nov. 7 at Le Rizz.
Since it opened in 1998, Pommes Ma-gic has grown to become one of the larger operations of its kind in Canada with its sliced apples currently distributed at retail locations across the country.
Mr. Alix said that his firm will be supplying a new two-ounce package of sliced apples to Lachine, QC-based Aliments Martel, which distributes its own lines of ready-to-eat meals to retail, convenience and institutional clients in Quebec, Ontario and the Maritime provinces.
The program was to begin with sliced sweet red apples -- Galas and Empires that are sourced from Quebec and Washington state -- the week of Nov. 24, and he said it would initially be available in about "10,000 points-of-sale" at convenience stores at Shell, Esso and Petro Canada gasoline stations, three of Canada's larger gasoline retailers.
Mr. Alix said that the apples would be available in packaging with completely new artwork and come in new display that will have six packages per box. He said the apples have a 21-day shelf life, and he expected some stores to receive three or four deliveries of apples per week.
"It's a good partnership," Mr. Alix said. "We have the expertise, and our facilities are located a half-hour from each other. Single-serve items like this promote a healthy lifestyle. A customer might run in and grab a sandwich and a water, and they now can get our apples for a snack."
