NAM and Apple Crunch receive House endorsement
The National Apple Month program received an additional endorsement from the U.S. House of Representatives when it passed a resolution sponsored by Rep. Todd R. Platts (R-PA), supporting the goals and ideals of both National Apple Month and Apple Crunch, which is a national promotion targeting school-age children.
A one-day event celebrating Apple Crunch is scheduled for Oct. 29 sponsored by the Penn State Hershey Center for Nutrition & Activity Promotion in partnership with National Apple Month.
The objective of the promotion is for schools to use this unique opportunity to encourage youngsters, and, by extension, their families, to enjoy apples and other apple products as a healthy snack.
Prior participants have indicated that school lunch participation increased 2- 3 percent when apples were featured on the menu, and bagged apple slice sales more than tripled during the month of October.
Additionally, by featuring apples and apple products on school lunch or breakfast menus, school foodservice directors have an opportunity to win up to $500 in cash prizes through National Apple Month.
"We are extremely enthusiastic with the potential of the two promotional events (fall retail and military display contests and Apple Crunch) and the potential they represent for each segment of the market -- retail, military commissaries and school foodservice," NAM Director Kay Rentzel said in a press release. "They provide the audiences with the opportunity to increase sales and awareness."
She noted that these two promotions provide a unique opportunity for schools and retailers to work together to promote greater awareness of the value of apples in the diet.
