Another set of national champions for California Giant Berry Farms cycling
California Giant is having a great summer with its premium-quality berries and champion cycling team, and the results could not be better.
The company's berry volume and quality has been excellent this year with optimum weather conditions providing consumer satisfaction all summer long. Feedback from buyers and consumers has been extremely positive, and the sales group is hoping for continued mild weather patterns throughout the rest of summer and into the fall so Cal Giant growers are able to ride out the rest of the season on a positive note.
The California Giant cycling team has also been producing some amazing results on the podium this summer. It all began in July when Henry Kramer won the 50-55 National Mountain Bike Championship in Mount Snow, VT. Mr. Kramer and long-time rival Paul Curly bolted away from the field early in lap one of the three-lap race. Mr. Kramer then charged away to win by over two minutes.
By Aug. 10, James Mattis and Andy Jacques-Maynes went one for two at the USA Cycling National Road Race Championships in Irvine, CA. Teammate Steve Reaney came in fifth. The team was extremely proud of Mr. Mattis when he competed and won in a field of 131 men. Mr. Mattis, from Mountain View, CA, soloed across the line eight seconds ahead of breakaway teammate Andy Jacques-Maynes, who is from Capitola, CA.
While the company was receiving the news of Mr. Mattis' victory, the first shipment of California Giant strawberries was on its way to Beijing, China, to feed athletes during the summer Olympic Games. This was a historic event for the company and the California strawberry industry since strawberries had never before been exported to mainland China.
As if that was not good enough, Ken Hanson delivered an encore performance Aug. 17 to teammate Mr. Mattis' elite road race national championship by winning the U.S. Elite Criterium Championships in Downers Grove, IL. "The heat is not my best weather for racing. But my teammates Patrick Briggs and Steve Reaney were just phenomenal on the last two laps," Mr. Hanson said in a press release. Teammate Andy Jacques-Maynes, who got in an early break with Adam Bergman from Texas Road House, failed when Mr. Bergman quit working with Mr. Jacques-Maynes.
"Andy Jacques-Maynes did a great job staying out there and putting everyone on the defensive while we just kicked back and followed wheels," Mr. Hanson added in the release. "We wanted to make sure not to get caught out on the front early, take our time and get to the other side of the figure eight before we went. Steven Reaney took me from there to the last corner and made it easy for me to pick my own line."
Anthony Gallino, California Giant vice president of sales and team director, has been busy this summer ensuring wins for both the berries going to consumers and riders crossing the finish line. "We have had a great summer berry and cycling season, and we look forward to kicking off the Cyclocross season just around the corner," Mr. Gallino said in the release.
