Nominations for packaging innovator awards due Sept. 5
NEWARK, DE -- Whose packaging has that special punch? Produce Marketing Association is looking for examples of innovative packaging solutions to be considered for the association's annual coveted Impact Award: Excellence in Packaging.
With less than one month left before nominations close Sept. 5, nominees will then vie for the title of exceptional produce or floral packaging innovator in their respective judging category. Winners will be named Oct. 25 at PMA's Fresh Summit International Convention & Exposition in each of the six award categories: food safety; functionality/technology; marketing design; marketing messaging/content; environment/sustainability; and supply chain efficiencies.
"Packaging offers the produce industry a world of opportunities to promote branding as well as key initiatives such as sustainability -- it's up to us to take advantage of them," Ronald G. McCormick, chairman of the PMA Packaging Council and vice president and divisional merchandise manager of produce and floral for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said in an Aug. 20 press release. "This award gives the companies that best demonstrate the out-of-the-box- thinking needed for impactful packaging the recognition and credit that they deserve -- and encourages others by example to take better advantage of their packaging options."
Nominations will be accepted through Sept. 5. Companies sending in multiple entries must include a separate nomination form with each submission. All nominated packaged products must be currently commercially available. Submission forms and instructions can be found at www.pma.com/packagingaward/.
A panel of packaging experts and product industry veterans has been selected to judge the award nominees: Leonard Batti, senior partner of MIXTEC Group; John Bernardo, founder and owner of Sustainable Innovations LLC; Odonna Mathews, president of Odonna Mathews Consulting Inc.; Jim Prevor, founder and editor-in-chief of Produce Business, Deli Business and Perishable Pundit; Paul Singh, professor at Michigan State University's School of Packaging; and Robert Whitaker, PMAs chief science officer.
Established in 2007, the award highlights innovative packaging ideas that positively affect produce sales -- whether the goal is to catch a consumer's eye on store shelves, protect a product in transit, extend shelf life or increase efficiencies and sustainability.
The awards will be presented Oct. 25, during the Fresh Summit breakfast general session beginning at 7:30 a.m.
