Brooks Tropicals excels in food safety audit
Brooks Tropicals' Homestead, FL, packinghouse, shipping docks and storage cooler were recently audited, and the inspector was quite pleased and impressed by what he found.
According to a Brooks press release, the facilities were so on target that the food-safety inspector had trouble believing his eyes, and he said that he planned to come back to see it again.
During the inspection, the auditor snapped dozens of photos to show other companies what a packinghouse and distribution center should look like, according to the release, which noted that Brooks' facilities were one of the cleaner he had ever seen. He even noted that it looked like a museum. The auditor raved about the company's efforts and performance.
The efforts paid off. Brooks Tropicals earned a 99 percent score on the Homestead facility shipping docks and coolers and 97 percent on the avocado packinghouse.
To pass a food-safety audit, a company must earn a minimum 80 percent, and scores above 92 percent are considered to be excellent.
Brooks Tropicals' Homestead facility joins the firm's Belize packinghouse in achieving high scores on food-safety audits. In May, the facility that packs the firm's Caribbean Red and Caribbean Sunrise papayas in Belize earned its second high score on a food-safety audit. This time around, the packinghouse achieved a 95 percent score.
Food safety is important to both Brooks and its customers. The firm's informational materials will be updated with the icons it has earned to tout its food-safety successes.
