The Produce Exchange's new variety of Roma tomato draws interest
On July 27, The Produce Exchange will show the new variety of Roma tomato developed by vegetable-seed company Nunhems at the upcoming 2008 Produce Marketing Association's Foodservice Conference, to be held July 25- 27 in Monterey, CA.
The tomato was introduced at the United Fresh Produce Association/Food Marketing Institute convention held in May in Las Vegas and drew a lot of positive responses, said Dennis Werner, general manager for the branded group at The Produce Exchange, which is based in Livermore, CA.
The new Roma has been developed by Nunhems to be the ultimate slicing, dicing and cooking Roma as part of its "Intense" tomato variety portfolio, Mr. Werner said. The Roma's characteristics provide added value for foodservice processors, retailers and suppliers, he noted.
Sam Jones, president of The Produce Exchange, said in a release that the tomato has "more meat and less gel" and that it "offers more usable output from processing, more flavor and is sweeter than traditional Romas."
The variety has high density while maintaining a high-flavor profile, Mr. Werner said. The deep red-colored tomato was awarded Berlin's annual Fruit Logistica Innovation Award for 2008.
Michel ten Hacken, Nunhems' head of marketing and sales for northern Europe, said in the release that the Fruit Logistica award shows that Nunhems' customers "have acknowledged the superiority of our best-in- class innovation" and that the tomato "succeeds to meet the requirements of consumers and food processors in terms of use options, flavor and appearance."
Mr. Werner said that the tomato has strong applications at foodservice. The first volume of any measure should be available in September, but heavy volumes likely will not be available until January, he said.
