The New York Apple Association in Fishers, NY, saw great success in the 2008 Defense Commissary Agency display contest, sponsored by the association and T. Marzetti Co.
"This contest has allowed our apples to be promoted, displayed in a big way and opened up new markets," David McClurg, vice president of marketing for the association, said in a press release.
This year's contest asked commissaries to construct apple displays that identified or mentioned New York state apples or use the NYAA's Apple Country logo. Marzetti carmel apple dip and apple crisp were also part of the displays.
There were six winners: Deborah Mundt at Fort Rucker in Alabama; Donna Evans at Sheppard AFB in Texas; Michael Howell at McConnell AFB in Kansas; Carol Foltermann at Little Creek NAB in Virginia; Mark Hare at Fort Drum in New York; and Myla Padua at Fort Gordon in Georgia.
The six winners each received an all-inclusive registration package to the Produce Marketing Association's Fresh Summit in Orlando, FL, and two-night hotel accommodations.
With a total of 61 entries from 24 states, it was the highest participation in the nine-year history of the program.
Displays were to include a minimum of three apple varieties in either bagged or bulk. Apple varieties used were McIntosh, Empire, Gala, Jonagold, Crispin, Red Delicious, Rome and Cortland.
The display had to be up for a minimum of two weeks this winter. This contest was open to any U.S. DeCA Commissaries east of the Rocky Mountains.
Entries were judged on the creative use of display materials, originality and sales appeal.
