Research provides consumers with sweeter celery and added convenience
Duda Farm Fresh Foods says it is committed to delivering quality, innovation and service to its customers, which is why the 82-year-old, family-owned, nationwide fresh fruit and vegetable company uses consumer research to guide its development of new varieties and innovations in packaging and merchandising.
Research shows that consumers are looking for convenience in their shopping trips. Merchandising can help provide that convenience by locating celery products adjacent to one another.
"Our consumer research confirms, when given multiple options in one display, consumers tend to choose more than one option," Nichole Towell, marketing development manager for Duda Farm Fresh Foods, said in a press release. "The big idea is to sell more celery."
Whole celery, hearts, sticks, branches and even organic selections located in the same display space make it easy for consumers to find, make selections and increase category sales. In fact, the company's retail tests have shown that there is value in merchandising celery products together, which shows a positive effect on sales and volume for the category.
There are two types of celery consumers: those who use celery primarily as a snack and those who use it as an ingredient in recipes. The snackers are helping grow the value-added segment as celery sticks are gaining in popularity. This presents a great opportunity for retailers to increase their celery business through sticks, sticks with dips and snack packs for lunch boxes.
Research also indicates that consumers in general would like to see more choices and new product options for celery, like "Dandy" brand washed and ready-to-eat celery sticks and trimmed, washed and ready-to-use "Dandy" celery branches.
Duda Farm Fresh Foods has an extensive celery-breeding program with a facility devoted to celery research. Over 1,200 new celery lines are developed each year to improve quality, texture and taste. The company currently uses a proprietary "sweeter" variety that has been rated superior in consumer taste panels and is available in the company's "Dandy" brand fresh celery sticks.
Information about Duda Farm Fresh Foods products will be available at the Canadian Produce Marketing Association convention May 14-16 in Calgary, AB.
